Deconstruction of 'The Grudge' ;

We decided to include the start of 'The Grudge' because it is a known horror movie which is the genre we are planning to use.The start of 'The Grudge' is very gripping and has a great deal of suspense.

The first still image we have used is the start were the background story is given, this gives the reader the idea of what the film is about. The background story is in a simple white font on black background this is possibly so that most people are able to read the font as it is important for anyone of the audience to understand the background story. Also the sound is intense and sets the mystical sound for throughout the film. The sound is almost like a heavy breathing with a few notes of tune to make it seem scary and similar to a sci-fi noise. The sound creates the drama and suspense to start the film, thus making the atmosphere for the audience very tense and spooky.The sound is anon-diegetic sound, which allows the audience to start feeling the suspense and mystery of the film.
The second still image is off the setting where the first bit of drama happens. The sounds around are of the city such as: building work and cars. However through this scene the mysterious sound from the start is continued but softer and as if it is underneath the city sounds. The still life shows the scene and is shown form the view of the man looking down on the city below him.
The third still image shows the man committing suicide and shows what he sees on the way down. Before this you are able to hear the woman talking to the man, who is obviously not in a safe state of mind, she talks in a reassuring tone, which makes the audience think that everything is alright. This happened while the continuous mysterious noise is continuing. The woman then says "your up early" which shows how this mans actions are out of the ordinary.The mans expression shows that something terrible is going to happen, because of how pale he is and the wideness of the eyes.
The fourth still image is of the man throwing himself of the balcony which shocks the audience, also the loud thud and breaking noise is to show how he has killed himself and also to represent the damage he has done to his body. Also in this scene u see how everyone has seen this happen have a shocked face including the women in the room, thus adding suspense to the image. The sound in this clip is a diegetic sound as there is a weird whispering which only the man can here, which adds the oddness to the image. The whispering is mixed into the mysterious sound to make it seem faint, the whispering is to represent 'The Grudge'. Also we see him graphically on the floor with the broken bones and lots of blood, thus suggesting that the film is for a older age. This also shows how the film has 'jumped' right into the action and drama of the film. An effect of the garphical image of the man dead, makes the audience feel uneasy: which is expected in a good horror film.
The fifth still image shows the title of the film after listing the creators and actors in the film. The red in the background will give the audience the thought of danger, but also it could represent the blood that has been and will be spilt in the film. The bold, black font makes it stand out from the red, also the ripple in the font may represent the water and the hair of the main character known as 'The Grudge', the sound also represents this by being non-diegetic and being the sound of flowing water. Once again the mysterious sound is carried through out the clip, but then ends with the sound of a drip of water/blood.
The sixth still image is the beggining of the film, whilst still showing the credits the mysterious sound is gone and is concentrating now on the spech of the younger girl. The start introduces two of the main characters and introduces the audience to the older woman, who seems lost and unaware of the world around her. It seems she has lost her ways and the mood of her face makes her seem as if she has seen a very tragic event. Also the lighting in this clip is dim and makes the audience feel the tension and the deathly feel of the film.
